Jennifer Lee, ASU Pre-Health Internship Program intern

Course of Study:

Ophthalmology

Internship site:

Eye Consultants of AZ

Has the internship stimulated your interest in the field?
Yes. I was already interested in the field before the internship. However, I can say that the internship has confirmed my interest in the field.  The nature my internship changed with time. The main focus was on learning terms and recognizing the patient-doctor environment. I was often in the room shadowing the doctor. Once I was comfortable, I was also placed in the pre-testing/prep area. Some simple tasks were given to complete for the day.

What key skills do you feel you have developed and gained from the internship? What have you learned from participating in the program?
As a previous OD Tech, I was able to gain key skills before this internship. Through this internship, I have developed/gained key skills that include adaptability, patience, and comprehension. I have also learned that details matter, notes are always necessary, and work ethic is important.

What suggestions would you give to students who want to participate in PHIP?
Be passionate. Be respectful. Use common sense. Understand the responsibilities.

What are your plans for career development and/or your education after your internship?
I plan to continue my volunteer and clinical hours while I prepare for medical school.
